Free Online Videos about RWI Phonics

At De Beauvoir, we learn phonics using Read Write Inc. There is a video about understanding phonics - have a look at why we teach phonics. 


It is important that the children are saying pure sounds. Have a look at how to say the different phonemes (sounds) in the English language. 



Watch Ruth and Rosie teach phonics lessons to help your child learn to read at home. Lessons are from Monday to Friday. Each one is ten minutes long and available for 24 hours.

Michael Rosen


Michael Rosen's official YouTube channel has lots and lots of stories and poems read by the famous author / poet himself! These include his brilliant book, 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt' as well as chapter books and hilarious poems. Did you know that Michael Rosen is a Hackney resident?

World Book Night - 23rd April



World Book Night is a national celebration of reading which takes place on the 23rd of April every year. Each year, events are used to celebrate the contribution that reading makes to people's lives. World Book Night is run by The Reading Agency, a national charity which tackles life's challenges through the proven power of reading.

To help parents and carers during school closure, BookTrust have provided a selection of free online books, videos, games and quizzes. These include Cressida Cowell reading her book, 'How to Train Your Dragon' and famous illustrators sharing how to draw characters from well-known books.

Storyline Online

Storyline Online is a website which streams videos featuring celebrated actors reading children’s books alongside creatively produced illustrations. Readers include Viola Davis, Chris Pine, Lily Tomlin, Kevin Costner, Annette Bening, James Earl Jones, Betty White and dozens more.

Audible Online Stories - Free


For as long as schools are closed, Audible are open. The aim is that students everywhere can instantly stream an incredible collection of stories, including titles across six different languages, that will help them continue dreaming, learning, and just being children. All stories are free to stream on your desktop, laptop, phone or tablet. Explore the collection, select a title and start listening.

Every day at 11am, you can listen one of David Walliams’ World’s Worst Children stories, so sit down, take a break, and enjoy 20ish minutes of pure fun!

Storytime Magazine

Storytime magazine is a subscription service that offers magazines with short stories, poems, rhymes and riddles and puzzles. They also provide free teaching resources on their website to support reading and learning about different types of texts.

Hackney Library


Hackney's e-library is available free of charge for all Hackney Residents, all you need is a library card and pin number to access it.

Due to the current situation, they are putting in a temporary change of procedure for those individuals that wish to have access to our e-library but are unable to come into the Library to get a library card.

When joining online you will be issued with a unique confirmation number ( this is the number you need to use when asked for the barcode number so keep it safe!) and be asked to set up a four digit PIN. Individuals can then access the following online resources:

RB Digital
ULlibrary (Ulverscroft library)
Pressreader

For RBdigital, ULibrary and Pressreader you have to supply your email address as well when you register with them for the first time.

The above resources offer a mixture of e-books, audiobooks, magazines, newspapers and some graphic novels. The e-books and audiobooks cover fiction and non fiction and cater for children and adults.


BBC 500 words - stories to listen to and inspire!


Each year, BBC Radio 2 runs a short story-writing competition for kids, in association with Oxford University Press. This year, children at De Beauvoir, students created lots of creative and imaginative stories and we are waiting to hear back from the judges. 

The stories written in previous years are avaiable to read and listen to on their website. The winning entries are read by famous celebrities and offer entertainment and inspiration. Have a listen to them by clicking on the link.

Oxford Owl Free e-Book Library

Oxford Owl have developed a free eBook collection for children aged 3–11 years old. All you need to do is register on the Oxford Owl website by clicking here.  
Children in Reception, Year 1 and 2 can also access a selection of free Read-Write-Inc books at their phonic level. Speak to your child about what colour book group they are in for phonics at school - or contact the school to speak to your classteacher about your level. 
Help your young child learn to read, and love to read, with this range of over 100 free eBooks.




Stories from Space

Have you ever dreamed of going into space? Do you want to be an astronaut when you grow up? If you were an astronaut, what would you do? 

Have a listen to Serena Auñón-Chancellor, an astronaut on the International Space Station, reading the book 'It I were an Astronaut'.
